History

The Democratic Party has a long and diverse history. Our history can be traced back to Thomas Jefferson, when he founded the party in 1792. Our history includes Thomas Jefferson as the first Democratic party president in 1800. At that point in our history, the party was known as the "party of the common man" or the Democratic-Republican Party. Our history is marked with several changes, including the decline of the party right before Andrew Jackson rejuvenated the party. The year 1824 marked a turning point in our history, when Andrew Jackson became the party leader. In 1844, forty-four years after Thomas Jefferson was elected president, the Democratic Party officially adopted the name it is known by today. Our history begins a new page from that point forward.

Our history demonstrates that the Democratic Party has always been the party of the common man, the party with the common man's best interest at heart. Our history is marked by some of the greatest men, and the greatest leaders, our country has ever seen. Our history includes Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy. Our history is a history of advancement, equality, civil rights, and economic flourishing.
